Captain America is the first Avenger. He started out as just plain old Steve Rogers. Without being too unkind, poor little Steve was a bit of a weakling. The main story starts for him in 1943 when he is rejected from joining the army during WWII. He goes to a modern high tech exhibition and gets recruited to the Strategic Scientific Reserve. Here he is basically a human guinea pig. The experiments going on here are to make a “super soldier” by injecting a serum and using “vita rays” on him. This is the 40’s so probably some kind of dangerous radiation. In any case, the experiment works and weedy Steve becomes taller and more muscular.
His Captain America persona starts out as a marketing tool to promote war bonds but before long he has embarked on a mission to rescue his friends from some Nazi scientists. He’s also up against the Red Skull, another super soldier experiment only an evil, Nazi version. By the end of his adventure he has crashed a plane into the Arctic. However, due to his super soldier status he doesn’t die! Merely “sleeping” he wakes up 70 years later and gets recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury. This is the start of his Avengers foray.
